This morning, my co-worker, Jill, and I were having a routine conversation about our lunch menus. I had mentioned that I had left my good left-over pizza at home, and therefore would be eating my standard soy product for lunch. Jill and I both enjoy a variety of soy products from the Boca and Morningstar companies….subjecting ourselves to lunch room hecklers. Jill mentioned that she liked the soy products, but thought they were a little expensive. My hand instantly sought my trusty calculator, and I approximated that each soy patty (if purchased from Wal-Mart) was $.625. We then started breaking down the cost of buns and side-items such as carrot sticks. We concluded that purchasing the soy products was still significantly less than eating out. All at once I was struck by the absurdity of the whole conversation. I observed to Jill that we were probably the only people who analyzed our lunches this much, and speculated that non-accountants were probably dining out daily without deliberation….which then led us to discuss the misuse of credit cards. Argh. Time for a vacation!

Huh! And all this time I didn’t think accountants knew how to socialize. What rock have I been living under?
Did you also calculate the opportunity cost between the time it takes to make your lunch at home, pick up something from out in town, or microwave a frozen meal?

Absolutely. A frozen soy patty can be microwaved in as little as one minute at work (no gasoline expense). Amazing.
