Six Sex and the City’s to Savor
April 22, 2008 by Allison
In preparation for the upcoming Sex and the City movie, I’ve been “studying” a sampling of each season’s best.
Season 1- Models and Mortals
This episode explored the attraction (of men in particular) to models, initiated by Miranda’s dating encounter with a “modelizer”. I personally have never been attracted to men who look model-perfect. This might have something to do with my possibly unfair assumptions about vanity and fidelity. Or it might have something to do with not wanting my guy to be prettier than I am. In any case, I prefer something a little more rugged…a scar here, a cowlick there. Men on the other hand (or at least the ones in this episode) don’t seem to have the same concerns about dating female models.
Season 2- Twenty-Something Girls vs. Thirty-Something Women
This episode delved into the differences between the two, one being that a twenty-something will hold her friend’s hair when she vomits (and is more frequently in the position to do so). Charlotte got crabs at the Hamptons while masquerading as a twenty-something and Carrie was crushed when she discovered that Big moved back from Paris and became involved with Natasha, a twenty-something. This got me to thinking about my life has changed since my twenty-something days…I have an imp child now, I wear sunscreen (sometimes) now, and I no longer participate in late nights with David Letterman to name but a few. I may have a few more laugh lines now, but I like to think that I’m a whole lot smarter now than I was then and that’s worth a laugh line or two.
Season 3- No ifs, ands or Butts
This one was all about the deal-breakers. For Charlotte, it was a bad kisser (the guy licked her teeth) and for Carrie’s new love interest, Aidan, it was smoking. The episode ended with Carrie affixing a nicotine patch to her arm. Everybody has or had deal breakers of their own. Some of the ones I can recall were bad breath, being rude to waiters/waitresses, and reckless driving.
Season 4- Change of a Dress
I have an intense emotional reaction everytime I watch this episode. Carrie wore Aidan’s engagement ring around her neck instead of on her finger claiming, “It’s closer to my heart this way.” Carrie was crazy. Aidan was a saint, and Carrie was lucky to have him. So what if she didn’t love him enough to marry him? He sanded her floors and made leather chairs for a living. Isn’t that enough? In the end, I coped by telling myself that Aidan deserved somebody better than Carrie (I like Carrie, but she definitely had relationship issues) and was happy to see that he had moved on the next season.
Season 5- Plus one is the Loneliest Number
This episode addressed the secrets we keep at the beginning of a relationship…Charlotte withheld her marriage and pending divorce from her fling, Miranda withheld the fact that she has a child from her date, and Berger waited until after Carrie became smitten with him to mention his girlfriend. I don’t think you necessarily have to throw all your cards on the table on a first date but marital status and the existence of a child or boyfriend/girlfriend seem pretty important. Oh, and Samantha had a chemical peel gone awry. I could completely relate as I once had a violent allergic reaction to a facial product (some kind of Aveeda product designed especially for senistive skin). Think Rocky from Mask.
Season 6- An American Girl in Paris (part deux)
This is my favorite episode in the whole series. I laughed, I cried, I watched it over and over again. Carrie moved with her boyfriend, Aleksandre, to Paris; Miranda and Steve dealt with his mother’s dementia (I cried during the scene with Miranda showing uncharacteristic gentleness in bathing her mother-in-law); Samantha underwent treatment for breast cancer and works through a “dry spell” with Smith; Charlotte and Harry experience the heartache and joys of the adoption process (which also made me cry). Carrie’s relationship with Aleksandre deteriorated rapidly ultimately ending with a backhanded slap. Moments later, Carrie discovered Big in the hotel lobby, and managed to stop Big from avenging the slap. That was probably the moment I finally started liking Big. Or should I say John?
Should I be this invested in a show? It is normal to ask WWCD (What Would Carrie Do) when faced with a dilemma? And I promise I’ll quit referencing SATC episodes so often in my blog comments. Let the countdown to the movie begin!
Not being either a subscriber of HBO or in possession of a uterus, and therefore unbeholden to watch “Sex and the City,”…I got nuthin!
No need for HBO- DVD’s
No need for a uterus either.
*Sigh* I’m rewatching season 6 right now in preparation for the movie.
I’m not sure which season it was, but I really liked the episode about singles v. married people. That made me laugh a lot–especially her comment about being in a room of Chanel perfume and wearing patchouli.
That quote was from episode 2 of season 1…I liked it too.

I’ve never watched a complete episode of this show but after reading your summary, I want to! What you said in your season one summary reminded me of a quote Keanu Reeves says in The Replacements, “Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory… lasts forever.” So true! There’s something about scars, stubble, and the other little “imperfections” that are incredibly attractive.
Watch it! Watch it! Watch it! You’ll like it
[...] it all? Because she took the plunge at 22 she’s an authority? Right. As Allison blogged, we get wiser with age. And at her age, I don’t think this acquaintance of mine should consider herself an authority [...]
I loved this show and was SO sad when it was over. I know they have bigger and better things to do, but are they as big as SATC?
They can’t be as big as SATC. The promise of a movie helps a little, but still.
After years of dissing this show because I just knew I wouldn’t like it, I broke down and put the whole thing on my Netflix queue. Loved every episode. I will see the movie, but probably not until it comes out on DVD.
And I’m with you on liking my thirties. Turning 30 was the best birthday that I remember. I just felt such a sense of clarity about who I was and what I was doing. My twenties were a weird, hazy mish-mash of cluelessness. And not because I was always drunk, either.
I finally gave the show a try after listening to a co-worker praise it and quote it for several years. I was kicking myself for not trying it sooner. I was so sleep-deprived from a 1-month old baby that I didn’t notice my 30th b-day enough to be traumatized by it
Yup. I’m in the same boat with Dobeman. I subscribe to HBO, but knowing I’m not exactly their demographic and not watching all that much TV anyway, I never really bothered. The few episodes I saw were fine in and of themselves, just obviously not my style.
I suppose it’s not for everyone.
Wow….reading this whole post was like a walk down nostalgic awesomeness lane
..and I am SO with you on the Aidan thing! EVERY time she was around him, I just said to myself “oh my gosh Aidan, you are so loveable and I just wanna hug you! (etc..etc..LOL..), but she doesn’t!!!” GAHHHHH……
How could she have treated Aidan that way? ARGH!!!
I miss S&C. Can’t wait for the movie! I’m wondering what’s going to happen with Mr. Big! Do you think he’ll leave her at the altar? Or will she leave him?
I purposely haven’t read anything about the movie because I want to be completely surprised.
Good thing I’ve had surgery and have that cowlick, then!
You don’t have to worry about a guy being prettier than you…couldn’t happen.
Good thing
Sex in the City is always available to me as it’s programmed on my TiVo. While there have been a few episodes that have made me cringe (Samantha’s experiences as a lesbian; Harry’s nakedness; Carrie getting caught by Natasha in Big’s apartment; Miranda’s fashion options) and while I can’t relate to everything (what single girl who writes for a living can afford Manolos?), I do enjoy SITC. I’m pretty sure my friends will want to see it opening night (but we won’t be bringing that one chick who claims to be offended by the show but is constantly watching it… freak).
Carrie getting caught by Natasha was horrifying…and then Carrie had the nerve to trick her into going to lunch with her to ask for forgiveness. Yeah, leave that chick home…freak.
Wow! I like these chicks and everything, can’t wait to see the movie — but you could turn this into some kind of an Excel spreadsheet.
All I know is . . . Big is so freaking hot.
A SATC Excel spreadsheet…I like your thinking!
I love this post because I LOVE the show. I never really liked Berger. I liked Big because who doesn’t like the wrong guy? Even though I knew he had mucho faults. It’s cliche’ but on the last epi when he was running up the stairs after the elf it literally took my breath away. Swoon. I can’t wait until the big day. There is a countdown that I love on the movie site, but it won’t work on WP. boohoo!
I haven’t figured out how to get back into the comments on the new WP dashboard. What’s the secret?
I really started liking Big in the last episode…he was finally knight in shining army material.
You click on the person’s name to get into the comment to edit. I figured it out by accident!
[...] a damn. It will be a cliche. Anyway, That’s What She Blogged talks about some of her favorite Sex and the City episodes in anticipation of the new movie. I hope she won’t be [...]
I liked this show, I don’t know how I feel about it being a movie. I thought that it ended pretty cleanly and I really can’t understand why/how it’s being made into a movie. Anyway, my favorite episode was definately An American Girl in Paris parts 1 and 2. And I always liked Big. I also really like the episode when Carrie is taking care of Big after his surgery.
I liked the Carrie as Candy Striper episode too…and then he had to go back to being Big again.
Thanks for the tip. I clicked around but never clicked on the person’s name. I probably should respond like you do….in the comment. It’s neater, and it bugs me to see my own icon over and over again. Which is probably weird.
