Showing My Age: 80’s Style- Vol. 3

Just when I thought I was over striped jeans and Jiffy Pop popcorn, Taoist Biker had to publish a comprehensive series of 80’s music blogs.  That, coupled with finding an image of McDonald’s Garfield mugs I once owned, launched another nostalgia bender.

Was there any better way in 1981 to express your friendship than to place a bunch of beads on a safety pin, christen them friendship pins, exchange them with anybody who had a decent pin to trade, and proudly affix them to your showstrings?  I didn’t think so.  Moving along to 1985, was there anything more annoying to teachers than hearing the bells of these Charmies necklaces jingle?  If nothing else comes from this blog post, other than I finally figured out what those necklaces were called…it will all have been worth it.  And Swatches.  Everybody knows Swatches.  I think you could even buy some little guards to protect the watch face.

Summer was all about playing outside with friends when I was a kid.  My friend down the street, Jenny, had these Smurf walkie-talkies.  If Thou shalt not covet thy friend’s Smurf walkie-talkies, had been a commandment, I would have perished long ago.  They definitely looked better than they worked.  For us to be able to hear one another, we had to be so close that we could have read lips instead.  I had a pink Schwinn bike with a banana seat very similar to the one pictured below.  The seat had flowers imprinted on it, and I had a bell with a deer on it.  I’m willing to bet that the banana seat would be a lot more comfortable than the seat I have now.  I also played with roller skates outside.  Mine were smurf skates, of course.

Mr. MenI can’t quite express how happy I am to have stumbled upon these little characters.  How could I have forgotten about Mr. Men?  Each character in the books taught some kind of moral lesson, in a creative and humerous way.  I always responded well to humor and bright colors as a child.

As we approach the summer Olympics, let me take a minute to reflect on some of my favorite Olympians of the past.  Mary Lou Retton- Every girl my age wanted to be her.  I still get excited when I see her today…even if it’s on a commercial for arthritis medication.  Greg Louganis- I held my breath every time he dove…and nearly passed out when he hit his head on that springboard in 1988.  Flo Jo- Remember her fingernails?

If you look closely, you’ll see that the Barbie and the Rockers doll came with a cassette tape.  This cassette tape contained the Rockers theme song and, well…I played it often.  It was just as bad as you might think.  Imagine a less talented version of Jem.  I also had a My Little Pony and a Pound Puppy

The majority of my summer hours were spent at the city pool.  My mom dropped me off when it opened and picked me up when it closed.  For sustenance, I ate Chick-O-Sticks from the canteen.  I also liked Chucky bars and Pop Rocks back in the day.  As an FYI, Pop Rocks, once moistened, will stain wood surfaces.  A camera flash lasts longer than a stick of Fruit Stripes gum, but the temporary tattoes made up for that.  Fun Dip…mmmmm.  I know somebody who eats the candy stick and throws away the Pixie Stick-like powder.  That’s just wrong (unless you’re throwing away the lime flavor).  I think Zero might be a misnomer.  Zero what–  Calories?  Flavor?  I think not.

Rainy days and winter were meant for board games.  I loved playing Cathedral and Payday with my BFF StacyI owned Operation but lost several of the bones/organs, so it was a little challenging to play according to the rules.  I tried to make articifical body parts to replace, but didn’t have much medical success.  This might explain any aversion I ever had about going into the medical field.

I have Tinkerbell Costmetic’s Peel-Off nail polish to thank for helping me kick my nail chewing habit.  My mother bribed me, and it worked.  I had Strawberry Shortcake paraphernalia out the wazoo…dolls, bedspread, tins, dishes, and the lunchbox pictured below (back when they were metal, and susceptible to rust).  I also had numerous Hello Kitty items.  I got a Hello Kitty diary for my 8th birthday, which started a lifelong tradition of journaling.

Of course, I can’t mention the decade of my childhood without paying tribute to a few cartoon such as Gummi Bears, Snorks and Rubik, The Amazing CubeOf these, Snorks was my favorite…probably because the Snorks reminded me of Smurfs.  Incidentally, I seem to recall a cartoon movie based on a children’s book about a teacher who was secretly a witch.  I think a couple of her students found out about it, and she let them ride on her broom with her.  It aired every now and then on Saturday mornings.  Does anybody else remember this???

A big thanks to Jenefur for reminding me about the Kodak Disk Camera and giving me a link to a commercial for it.

I don’t miss the perms, high bangs or Aqua-net, but I do sometimes miss those Garfield Mugs.  Oh, and kudos in advance to anyone who comes up with an answer to my cartoon questions.

  • I have had many of milk servings from the Garfield canoe glass. Where do you find this stuff? I am impressed!

btw, if I was a Mr. Men, I would be Mr. Bump. You know, the guy with all the bandages?

Hours of introspection and searching Google images are to blame for these posts. I am extremely jealous about your Garfield mug, and may have to head over to Ebay now.

  • Loved the nostalgia post. I wish I knew the name of the cartoon, but I’m older than you and am not sure I ever saw that one. Speed Racer was the one we hurried home from school to watch. My ‘lil brother, Kurt, and I used to eat Jello while watching SR. Mind you, we didn’t actually make the Jello, as directed. Rather, we would pour it into cups, wet our fingers and stick it in the powder. Yum, the original Lick ‘m Sticks.

Family Affair- who didn’t love Mr. French?!
HR Puffnstuf- now that is GOOD tv

    Love your writing, darlin’

I’ve never heard of Family Affair, but I’m sure that if you loved Mr. French…I would too. I propose that you start a blog of your own (that I would read faithfully), and write a post about the shows you remember. Then you can write a post about candy bars from A to Z :-)

BTW, Did the undiluted Jello stain your teeth?

  • Oh, and I could go on and on about candy. Not long ago, Kurt and I tried to name a candy to go with every letter of the alphabet. I think we only lacked one- perhaps the letter Q.

    Sugar is my friend.

Must run in the family ;-) As I recall, Grandma had a sweet tooth too.

  • Ok, honestly I have no clue what you’re talking about because I was busy watching Thundercats, Transformers and GI Joe. Probably He-Man thrown in there for good measure.

Best I could Google is “The Trouble with Miss Switch”. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Trouble_with_Miss_Switch

Someone else seems to have the same question: http://www.80scartoons.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=305&sid=bee2f9cf32dafc7f22a5cdf5574d7d87

    Did I get it?

You are my new best friend. I can rest now, knowing I can watch YouTube clips any time I want. Gracias, thank you and Carpe Diem.

  • I loved those 80s glasses and mugs. I was forced recently to bring home a fast food glass with King Kong on it. My mom hopes eventually to have it all crowding my house instead of hers. ha! I missed Charmies because I thought I was too old for them but I remember that Barbie because I played with them FOREVER. I started my journaling in a Hello Kitty diary too. I remember it smelled like the candles in the store. Fun post!

Hello Kitty stuff was the bomb-diggity. I think I still have the key to my old diary, though I through the actual diary away several years ago (I’m now regretting that decision).

  • Just wanted to let you know that Mr.Man is back on the air on Cartoon Network in the mornings. Our son loves that show!

    Eek! Must investigate!!

  • That Fruit Stripe gum flavor didn’t last long, but boy was it good. After the flavor was gone I’d spit it out and chew a new piece. ;)

How long did it really last? 8 seconds? I agree….I would rotate pieces until the pack was gone 5 minutes later.

  • I remember one of the network, NBC I think, would actually run a prime-time preview of its’ upcoming Saturday morning cartoon season. Ribix, the Mmazing Cube was the end of the good cartoon era…product placement at its’ finest.

The higher the emphasis on product placement, the poorer the quality of cartoon…my personal opinion.

  • I’m still ticked off at my parents for never getting me a banana seat bike.

At least I did have the Garfield glasses…and the Pizza Hut Care Bear glasses, and the Pizza Hut E.T. glasses….and….

Heehee…Tinkerbell nail polish…I can still remember the smell of it!

Now I might be ticked at my parents for never getting me Care Bear glasses!

  • These posts are GREAT! I think I’m a little older than you (I started 1st grade in 1971), but I remember a LOT of this stuff! My sister’s grew up in the 80’s and the big thing for my one of them was Holly Hobbie. A few years ago, I bought her a vintage doll on ebay. What a trip back!

Thanks for all the photos – I know how much time it took to hunt them all down!

Oooo, Holly Hobbie. I had her oven, and I still ocassionally crave a little cake from it. I would love for her to become popular again!

You’re welcome. It did take a long time, but it was time enjoyably spent.

  • This was your most glorious trip down memory lane to date! :-)

I LOVED the series of Barbie dolls with the musical tapes; for one Christmas my sister got “California Barbie” which included roller-skates for her and a cassette tape, and I got “Dance Club Barbie” which also included a cassette tape, and OMG I still remember the chorus from that song:

“Everybody get in the groove…doin’ “The Barbie”, doin’ “The Barbie!”…

…as a grown-up I’m realizing that the chorus was perhaps a little inappropriate…*sigh*…it’s so sad how adulthood corrupts us ;-)

PS: LOVED the Gummi Bears cartoon, and my banana-seat bike was a SHE-Ra one ;-)

I probably had the greatest sense of satisfaction after completing this one because the whole “Charmies” necklace thing has been haunting me for years. I’m glad that you enjoyed, and I’m glad that you got to experience quality Barbie music too ;-)

  • Thanks for a great trip down memory lane. A decidedly girly slant, but understandably so. I had forgotten about the Kodak disc camera. I had one of those!

I did play with my brother’s Star Wars figurines from The Empire Strikes Back…I guess I should have looked for the plastic ice scene and the Leia figurine. I also played with Scarlet from GI Joe…that’s about as boyish as my toys got.

  • I love your 80’s posts! I spent a lot of hours on Saturday watching I Love the 80’s on Vh1…again! I think I’ve watched all three versions at least 4-5 times…at least. And I love it everytime.

Those VH-1 specials are positively addictive! DT’s and all.

  • Okay, cripes this scares me to admit, but my little brother and I had Smurfs roller skates as well. It was only after I outgrew my pair and had to rent a pair at the skating rink again that I discovered how badly they stank…I almost killed myself on wheels (with bearings) that actually ROLLED.

I never saw Mr. Men, which stunned my wife this weekend when a commercial came on and I gave her the “huh?” when she asked if I remembered them.

My first bike had a banana seat. And ape-hanger handlebars. And no training wheels. My grandfather didn’t think about that part – I had to borrow my uncle’s ginormous 1962 bike with training wheels to learn before I could “graduate” onto my Huffy Star Spangler. (A quick Google search brought no images, but apparently tons of guys had these as kids – lots of blog entries!)

Yum. Zero bars. And some small-market candy bar called “Peanut Butter Frost” – imagine a 5th Avenue with white chocolate, mmm-mmm. Yep, now I’m hungry.

That is so funny that you mention that about the lack of bearrings in the Smurf skates…I later acquired a pair of hand-me-down Garfield skates and I nearly killed myself going downhill on my street.

The training wheel thing is funny too. I was the last kid in the neighborhood to take the training wheels off of my bike. My 17-yr old next-door neighbor, Kyle, finally felt sorry for me and taught me how to ride without the safety net.

    Peanut butter frost sounds divine.

  • Ok I admit it, I handed down my Strawberry Shortcake dolls to my youngest daughter just 3 years ago. She also understands that I want them back. And yes they still smell!
My bedroom theme was Holly Hobbie and don’t forget her friend Heather!
Who could forget Mitch Gaylord from the 1984 gold winning gymnastics team!

I have very good intentions of giving my Cabbage Patch Kids to my daughter someday…I’m waiting until she at least masters not peeing on herself.

I’m drawing a blank with Mitch. The name sounds familiar, but I can’t picture him. I only had eyes for Greg apparently (though I now know there was no hope for me).

  • Aw! Hello Kitty and frienship pins! Ah, memories.

I love that Hello Kitty is still popular :-) I can get a fix any time I want.

  • teachercarrieaz

Oh man, someone already beat me to it. I remember the awesome Care Bear glasses from Pizza Hut. They also had the really cool Flintstones glasses as well. I found them on ebay a couple years ago and would have bought them up if it wasn’t for the fact that I was a poor college student.

I had a charm necklace and then I accidentally left it some where and it was stolen. I do remember having a charm that was a toilet and the lid lifted up. There were quite a few others on there. I think there is a picture of me at my birthday party wearing it.

Those charms were the best. The one I remember most was a baseball bat and ball. You go to dashboard, then the comments tab, and then click on the person’s name to open the comment for editing. You can choose to do bold and/or italics to distinguish your text from the original text. Hope that helps.

Hey Allison…how do you reply to people’s comments? I can’t figure out how to do it.

  • Dude, check this…

“…Guuumy bears…bouncing here and there and everywhere. High adventures that’s beyond compare…they are the gummy bears!”

I COULD recite the lyrics for “The Smurfs” but I think you get the picture. My childhood was pretty lame!

The music that used to play whenever Gargamel and Azriel were up to no good just went through my mind. The Smurfs season 1 is on DVD now, and I’m seriously considering requesting it as a gift. Understandable to want and watch as a child, but I would probably have to watch in secret now. Oops, I’ve got a kid now. I can always use her as my excuse!

  • I also remember the witch-teacher cartoon… though not well enough to recall a title.

It’s astonishing how these posts of yours pull me into such a deep reminiscence.

    Apparently, she was Miss Switch.

The bad thing is, once you get started…it’s hard to turn off the 80’s switch. I keep having these 80’s memories, and I don’t know at what point another volume would just be considered obscene.

  • Ha! This was great. I had a sticker book and I remember having a Mr. Men sticker page!!! I had totally forgotten about those li’l dudes…

I had forgotten about them too, but now I want to find some of the books to read again.

  • I heart Mr. French!!! This takes me waaaay back. And of course, I now have a strange craving for Fun Dip … please note, Lita Myrtie, my Cabbage Patch Kid, is still sporting those beaded safety pins on her little white and pink plastic sneakers.

My “oldest” CPK, Leslie Marilyn has white and pink plastic sneakers too. What names! I never re-named any of mine.

  • PS — I recall the teacher-witch movie. If I’m not mistaken, one “scene” in the book featured a brownie-preparing incident. Hmm, now I have a strange craving for brownies …Speaking of Mitch Gaylord … do you remember that cheezy but awesome movie he was in with Wayne Gretzky’s wife (Janet Jones) about Olympic-bound gymnastics?

After a quick Google search: American Anthem (1986). I haven’t seen it, and I’m a little reluctant after watching Karate Kid again recently.

  • American Anthem was a stupid but great movie! A bonus for me was the soundtrack had 2 songs by Andy Taylor, the guitarist from Duran Duran!

  • This is nothing to do with anything, but I just figured out how you’ve been replying to your comments!

As with everything else computer-related, I figured it out be accident.

  • TIP… I saw a SET of the Garfield collectible mugs at the self proclaimed “GIANT Flea Market” a few months back. They also had the Smurf tumblers. I was very close to buying them, but I decided against it due to lack of cabinet space.

Thanks for the tip :-) I tend to be a packrat in memory only, but I could totally justify the Garfield mugs as practical dishes.

  • 80s toys were fun and I was a child then. I cannot remember the days without toys inside of our chocolates. 80s are Cabbage patch kids oh well its all in a distance memory with technology, expect in at times, pop bottles lol.

    Good times.

  • I still have my very first PoundPuppy. And he is ragged.

Mine went to the stuffed animal pound…Goodwill.

  • This blog rocks! I’m adding you on my Top Posts list! The 80’s are so awesome…LOL

    Awesome and rad.
