Give me a nostalgic twitch and a spare hour (or two), and I will come up with an 80’s post.
This Stawberry Shortcake in Big Apple City board game was based on a TV Special of the same name. I’m guessing that it was my first dabble into the world of cross-marketing to children. I don’t really remember much about the game, other than that the goal was to evade the Peculiar Purple Pieman of Porcupine Peak.

Does anybody else remember the Le Clic camera? In the world before pink cellphones and pink MP3 players (actually, in the world before cellphones and MP3 players altogether), a fun-colored camera was a big deal to me. And whatever happened to those flat, rectangular cameras. They disappeared even faster than the Polaroid.

I vividly remember going with my mom to the corner drugstore on the town square to buy Gingham Girls coloring books. To this day, I attribute my fondness for gingham to Sarah, Katie, Becky & Carrie.

Take the hair clip below…make it fluorescent yellow and add a butterfly design to it. I had a hair clip just like that. I wore 2 at a time…one for each side of my head. The only thing that could top that was when I curled my bangs into a style no one should ever have worn. Thankfully, I had this butane-powered cordless curling iron to get me through limited receptacle situations such as gym class and summer camp. Fortunately, I had this attractive and practical Caboodles to store all of my beauty crap accessories (yes, I still have it).

My Sam & Libby ballet flats were white instead of pink. I wore those shoes in 1989 with my footless, lace-trimmed leggings. I never had a pair of Original Dr. Scholl’s sandals, but I covetously admired my BFF’s red pair. Does anybody remember the flat shoes with criss-cross straps that fastened with a covered button? They were popular in 1986, but I couldn’t find an image of them anywhere.

This is a scary look into my personal 80’s style vault. In the first photo, you will notice that I am wearing fluorescent clothing and a painter’s cap. I consider the next photo to be the epitome of all things 80’s. I am wearing striped jeans, purple fluorescent socks, and jelly shoes. The stripes on my jeans were multi-colored. Of course, no 80’s style vault would be complete with a visual representation of my hair. This was the crowning achievement of my 80’s hair career…mile-high bangs, spiral curls, and some kind of bizarre wing thing. Not to mention the hair-bow custom made to match my dress. (I actually made those earrings with craft roses and a glue gun. How sick was that?)

In general, I have fond memories of my childhood record albums…with the exception of this blue Pac-Man album. It was as awful as you might imagine. Nothing at all like my cool Strawberry Shortcake in Big Apple City and Strawberry Shortcake Country Jamboree albums. I still have those albums, though my kiddie record player stopped working years ago.

Technically, this Kenner Darci doll is from the late 70’s, but I can remember playing with my older cousin’s Darci doll (and her Donny & Marie dolls) in the early 80’s.

I can’t believe it has taken me four 80’s posts to get to Herself the Elf dolls and Poochie. My favorite part was that each doll had a bell on her dress. I actually had a Poochie stamper kit just like the one pictured here.

I had a friend who owned a pair of Romper Stompers. I always looked forward to playing at her house because I knew I was going to get to walk around on them. I think I might have liked the toy better than I liked the friend. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that…though I suppose it pales in comparison to the embarrassment I feel about the bangs I used to sport.

Thank you once again for indulging my nostalgia. I wanted to post a picture of somebody wearing 80’s shoulder pads, but it just brought back too many painful memories.

Forced to by a lack of other original programming, have you, like me, been watching a lot of “I Love the 80s – 3D?” on VH1?
On just about all of the Fads and Toys they show, I look over at CareerMom and say, “Never had ‘em. All my friends did though.”
It was a sad, sad childhood!

I was going to write a thoughtful comment about Strawberry Shortcake and how they are “reimaging” her but then I saw your 80s hair and…
um…
yeah…
What was I going to say?

I remember when Sam & Libby’s came out that you could not find them anywhere around here. I remember my mom and I traveled to Nashville to get them because they had them at their stores (that was seriously the only reason we went, and we even got a matching pair). I loved those shoes!!
Childhood record albums were awesome. Oh how I wish I did not destroy them when I learned records weren’t cool anymore. Im sure they would have been worth something (at least to me with the memories). I remember sitting one day and breaking them…. on purpose. What was wrong with me? Geez.
Lol-to the plaid outfit picture!!! Will you wear your hair like that when we have your going away party on Wed?
I also had the skinny rectangular camera (kodak) in bright blue. Pink would have been better…
Thanks for another exciting trip down memory lane!

I remember that board game – I loved all things Strawberry Shortcake. The new one looks weird – like a bobble head with no bobble to it.
Does anyone remember those Snoopy Sno-Cone machines? I thought of that when you mentioned the friend with the cool toy that you liked more than her. A little girl near me had a Snoopy Sno-Cone machine and even though I thought she was bossy and mean, I played over there a lot. Coloured syrup and crushed ice cubes are pretty cool.

Sam and Libby! I had pair of white ones and a pair of pale pink ones. Good memories!

Romper Stompers. We used to tie the “rope” together and just use the rope and cans as a kind of nunchucks.
Picture this…
One guy in the yard swinging Romper Stompers and a guy on the other side trying to hit him with some Jarts.
Fun times for all!

I may vaguely remember a hair-crimping incident.

The picture of you in the painter’s cap reminds me of Brenner. Hmm….;)
Lovies,

I loved my Ginghams coloring books! My daughters will still color in what blank pages are left in them while they are at my folks house. There was a clothing line that I can’t remember the name, maybe Units?? But anyway, they consisted of all these clothing items, shirts, skirts, pants you name it that were of a stretchy cotton and you layered them and wore them all differently. I challenge you ti find them. I loved them and I couldn’t find an image of them anywhere! I was a dancer and I wouldn’t have been able to live without my Conair butane curling iron during recitals or competitions. And I had a Caboodle filled with my Wet N Wild makeup!!

You don’t really hear the term “jamboree” anymore, do you?
The only thing I had on here was Romper Stompers. So I guess that is a good thing. Do they still make toys like that now a days? If so, does it require a helmet? I imagine the chance of a twisted ankle would prohibit the new generation from enjoying Romper Stompers. Poor kids.

Wow, there are actually several things in there that I don’t recognize. I did however have one of those pink rectangular cameras and loved that thing to death! I guess you could say my photography obsession started with that tiny thing. It worked pretty well for what it looked though I must say.

Wow, to think that I lived through the 80’s and don’t know most of the stuff you mentioned. Strawberry Shortcake, of course, was pretty unavoidable, and became a household name even among us of the male gender—but the I had no idea the rest of those things existed.
Except, of course, the rectangular camera… I still have mine.

I loved my le Click. It took some pretty good pics.
Poochie. Wow, I had forgotten about that. I didn’t have one of the stamper sets though.
I did have the romper stompers, and this month’s Family Fun magazine has instructions for making your own as a craft project.
I’m jealous that you still have your Caboodle. I had one that I loved, and drug to every junior high slumber party.

I never had that camera, but I did have a red polaroid Zip. Would you believe that I still have a box of Ginghams paper dolls? I did have a coloring book but I think I tossed it because I realized it was SOOOO bizarro to have a nearly 30 year old coloring book. I had a Darci doll, (I was probably closer to your cousin’s age) she was like an amazon Barbie. They definitely couldn’t share clothes.

HAHAHA….I loved that 80’s picture of your hair! The spiral curls really did it for me…HAHAHAHA (laughing with you, always laughing WITH you
)
PS: oh how I loved my lace-trimmed footless leggings…I had white ones which I wore with jean shorts….seriously? Seriously.

That one pic with the red plaid is rather Nelly Olson like. Is that a common observation? Just curious.

All of our old family vacations were lovingly documented on one of those rectangular cartridge-film 125 cameras.
I was particularly proud of my collection of “Book and Records” when I was a kid. Honestly, I think that those and comic books, in some combination, should get credit for my learning to read at such an early age.

My friend had those Dr. Scholls in 1986, and i even commented on them in her yearbook. Funny you mentioned them. Oh, I just love 80s pictures, the one of you in the plaid blouse is classic!

Polaroid cameras were the best…who doesn’t like something that folds up & prints instantly?!

So I just got through reading all 4 of these 80s posts, and even though I was born in 85, I still remember 90% of this stuff. I think it kind of leaked into the early 90s… my favorites are the Trixie Belden books (I have most of them and still read them), jelly shoes, pretty much any 80s movie (Molly Ringwald is my hero… but I agree with you, I couldn’t bring myself to like her pink prom dress), and Scratch and Sniff stickers. Props on some amazing blogwork.
