A Bit About Me
December 6, 2007 by Allison
Hello, I’m Allison. I’m originally from a very tiny midwestern town where gun racks, big trucks and country music (I must admit that country music stuck with me) ruled the land. I endured the humiliation of wearing a shirt that proclaimed “Hot Eats – Cool Treats” while working at DQ in high school, and left the experience with a slight aversion to ice cream and the acute awareness that I never wanted to work in fast food again. After graduation, I headed south to the charming campus of Western Kentucky University. While there, I acquired many lifelong friends, a keen interest in climbing hills and a practically useless B.A. in psychology. I next headed to the University of Kentucky for a Masters in Social Work…not one of my better decisions as I was to painfully learn after working just a mere year in the field. Following my interest in bank reconciliations and tax returns, I took accounting classes at night while maintaining my full-time social work job. Somewhere along the way, I happily acquired a handsome, smart and caring husband (Name: Matt, Occupation: Counselor). I eventually finished my classes, and now work as a CPA in public accounting. My husband and I have a 2 ½-year old imp. She is the proverbial apple of my eye, and I can’t imagine a world without her in it. We also have an 8-year old pug named Zoe. She is extremely tolerant of the imp’s pushing, pulling, tugging and taunting.
In my spare time, I like to hike, bicycle, canoe, hit the gym and read. Jane Austen is my all-time favorite author, but more recently I have enjoyed The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. My prized possession is the complete collection of Trixie Belden mystery books (similar to Nancy Drew, only better.) I don’t watch TV very often…but when I do, I like to watch NBC’s The Office and TLC’s What Not to Wear. I see movies even less frequently than I watch TV, but I try to make time a couple of nights a year to re-watch my absolute favorite movie, The Notebook *swoon*. Matt and I enjoy game nights and dinner with an extensive and eclectic group of friends. Some of our favorite games include Cranium, Taboo, Loaded Questions, Trivial Pursuit, Password and Pictionary. We also enjoy date nights by ourselves, thanks to our great babysitters…authentic Mexican restaurants are our weakness (think queso dip.) Our church rocks (literally.) Speaking of my husband…he’s certifiably crazy and I encourage you to peruse his blog world to see for yourself.
I like to write a little bit about everything- work, family, cooking disasters, people at the gym, etc. I’ll even draw a picture if inspiration strikes. Comments are always appreciated- they let me know that somebody actually reads (and has an opininion about) what I write. Thanks for stopping by!

Hey, What fun! Mt Si never looked so good. Great shot of you in the canoe…I’m thinking from one of your trips with your father.
Working in fast food is awful, but getting to turn the Blizzard upside with the spoon hanging down-pretty cool. I work with some social workers so I’m getting to understand you guys. And I am an avid reader. Southern fiction is my weakness.
You’re right - turning the blizzard upside down was pretty cool (not so pretty with a milkshake though)!
Ok. I have added you to my blogroll for meritorious blog writing that includes:
1- not ashamed to post pictures from the awkward years of childhood
2-excellent memories through reminiscing
3-you are a reader-apparently an avid one-please check out my blog for your input on reading
4-you know how to make a peanut buster parfait
All eminent qualifications indeed
I am honored :-).
a) If you can’t laugh at yourself…
b) My old diary is coming in quite handy.
c) I am, and I will!
d) And how to make the little curl on top of a cone of soft serve.
The curl on the top! True dedication to the DQ corporate mission statement. Most don’t even bother any more. But that wasn’t the true test. True test was doing the chocolate dip-especially the first time-impossible if the ice cream is too soft. By the way, my knowledge comes only from being a frequent customer and work experience in a faux DQ poser at 16 years of age.
Holy cripes - You’re not kidding, you do know DQ culture. I lost many a soft serve cone to the dipping vat due to consistency issues. DQ something different!
From a former Pizza Hut delivery driver to a former DQ girl… you’re not alone in the fast food franchise recovery group.
From small beginnings big things can grow.
YES! Trixie Belden rocks!
…and the rest of the Bob-Whites too
thanks for the post, i loooooove ‘the office’ and am sadly sadly sadly missing the episodes while the writers are on strike. i’ve said it many times before, i must know what is going on between pam & jim!
PB&J forever!
Hi Allison! I saw your post on Stephanies blog and thought I’d check out your blog. Your about info makes me miss my little boy who is in Louisville. See Kentucky is where I wish I lived. Hopefully that will change soon. Oh well, nice to meet you.
Louisville is a great city…I got to spend quite a bit of time there after my husband’s kidney transplant and grew quite fond of it. I hope you get to see your little boy soon!
Hi there, Read Matt’s blog and had to come say hello. You have a beautiful family. Can’t wait to read more. Veronica
Hello!
I like your site. Nice picture of the little artist
Best regards, Lilja
Thanks, Veronica & Lilja, for stopping by
I really enjoy your blog!
and as bad as DQ must be (not as prevalent here in Charleston, SC) my first job was at a Skate Rink Snack Bar surrounded immediately by trailer parks. There’s no better way to spend the hours of 6pm to 1am on a friday night when you’re 16.
also, you smell like hot dogs and canned chili/cheese. (not as awesome as you would think. not at all)
not that you yourself smell like chili/cheese and hot dogs… not that there’s anything wrong with that…
I actually wouldn’t think that smelling like hot dogs and canned chili/cheese would be awesome. Well, maybe a little awesome.
Your blog is very funny. I thought about peanut M&M’s the whole time I was at the gym this morning.
Sorry my random changes to my page have confused and worried….
I updated my About Me section so it actually says something…glad you like my ‘kid judo’ story too…
Hi, Allison. Stumbled upon your site through tag surfer…You rock! Peace to you and yours.
Hey Allison! Thanks to your reaction, I found your blog. It is really cool, love the way you describe 80s stuff and mom jeans. They still are amazing. And now the 80s are so hot again, time to get your power dresses out of the closet again. All the best Richard
Virginbrain- I’m glad you enjoyed. Thanks for visiting my page
Between canoing, Trixie Belden and Loaded Question you’re definitely on my “cool list”. =]
Cute pictures!

I’m honored
